3 Students From Delhi University’s CVS File RTI After Failing a 5th Semester Exam For Second Time

College of Vocational Studies: In another bizarre incident at the University of Delhi, three students with standing arrears from the College of Vocational Studies have been marked with an F grade yet again. The students from Computer Science Honors complain of continuous backlogs in the core paper of ‘Theory of Computation’ in semester 05.

The students were supposed to graduate in 2019 but could not, unfortunately, because of the backlog in semester 05. They re-appeared for the exam in November/December 2019 and awaited their results with a surety that they will clear the paper in the second attempt. But the results were grossly delayed because of the DUTA strikes when the teachers boycotted the examination duties and the compilation of the results received a setback. The results for Computer Science Honors were declared in the month of February 2020 and the students have conferred with an F grade again.

They applied for the re-evaluation of their answer scripts as well as an RTI (Right To Information) which implied that they could gain access to their answer scripts as a public record. One of the students visited the North Campus to procure a copy of her answer script on March 16, 2020 but was sent back on the account of the answer script lying in the South Campus instead. She was, however, after a lot of requests,  provided with a phone number that would inform her about the availability of the copy. The student was never called back again and her several calls to that number went unanswered, as well.

“My whole career depends on it. I will have to spend another year because of a discrepancy somebody else made while checking my answer sheet and this is not even the first time it is happening. I paid a thousand rupees for re-evaluation. It is a lot of money for me. I belong to an underprivileged family. We could have had ration for two weeks with that money but I somehow arranged it and paid… I wouldn’t have wanted to fail again. Three of us sat together and we have a backlog in the same subject that might mean there is some discrepancy,” said the student.

One of them is an international student whose visa is on the verge of expiration but the administration miserably delayed the process of providing them with a copy of their answer scripts which was worsened by the sudden lockdown.

At a time when the University administration is being surrounded by piles of result blunders, this has exponentially devastated the lives of many students who are financially unable to pay for a re-evaluation of each paper or are not in a stable mental state owing to the lockdown and the poor grades.
