You can take Delhi University out of politics but you cannot take politics out of Delhi University!

DUSU (Delhi University Students Union) elections are considered the most high profile student union elections in the country at college level as they provide an opportunity to enter directly into local and national politics.Arun Jaitely,the current finance minister is one of the prominent names who first ruled DUSU and made it big at the national level.

So,if you’re politically motivated and want to do something in this field or if you just want to be a NETA in the most crude terms then DUSU elections are your way to glory.The University of Delhi has a long history of student political activity since 1954.

Last year,NSUI candidates Rocky Tuseed and Kunal Sehrawat won the post of President & Vice President respectively.ABVP’s Mahamedhaa Nagar and Uma Shankar won the Secretary & Joint Secretary post respectively.

Let us throw some light on the political parties of Delhi University!

Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad is the only major right-wing representation in DU’s political pitch.ABVP is the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and shares nationalist ideologies with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

All India Students Association (AISA)

The All India Students Association emerged as a galvanising force in 1990 grounding itself on the ideology of the Naxalbari peasant movement and the 1974 peoples movement in Bihar. The organisation believes that Marxism can liberate the society and can lead to human emancipation. Its critical stand towards ‘fascism’ and political forces that divide masses on religious lines is what inspires belief in its members.

Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS)

The Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS), the AAP supported student body is the youngest party in DU’s political circuit.With AAP and Arvind Kejriwal’s ideas in mind, CYSS is committed to ending money and muscle power in campus elections. CYSS claims a strong level of intra-party coordination and a firm adherence to clean and honest politics. They believe that the crippling problems of the nation like corruption and hunger can be solved if parties stand by clean politics. Focusing on student issues, they want to rid the election scenario of vulgar splashing of money and the intimidating presence of outsiders.

National Students Union of India (NSUI)

A proud Centrist party, NSUI came into existence on 9th April 1971, and boasts of 4 million members and around 1,30,000 office bearers and units in 14,500 colleges across the country.Their mission is to “empower the student community, to create responsible citizens and leaders based on the values of democracy, secularism, liberty, quality & equality”.

Delhi University Students Union is the representative body of the students from affiliated colleges and faculties of the University.Apart from this,each college has its own students union to which elections are held every year. The student elections are fought keenly and with great enthusiasm. In the past, several of the office bearers of Delhi University Students Union have gone on to hold public offices in State and Central governments.

The elections to Delhi University Students Union are done by direct voting by the students of member colleges.The elections are usually held in August-September of each year.Also as we all are aware that elections are on there way so get ready to witness graffiti,posters, pamphlets as a part of political campaigning done by candidates fighting the elections.
