A 2016 regulation of UGC which was then implemented by DU made it mandatory for the students to get at least 50% in entrance exam to appear for the interviews of MPhil and PhD.
In such a crowd of students, taking one as example is Mohammad Asim (24) who scored 88 out of 196 in entrance exam of MPhil in History in Delhi University ranking 17 in the Other Backward Class (non-creamy layer) category. But according to the regulation, he needed to score 98 to qualify for an interview and to be eligible for the same.
On Wednesday, there were seen about 15 students sat on a hunger strike at DU’s Arts Faculty. “It is not just the reserved category students who are suffering, but many general category students haven’t qualified as well. It looks like I will end up wasting a year as I have not applied anywhere else,” said Asim, who has completed his Masters from DU’s History department.
Students have also moved the Delhi High Court seeking relief.After this incident, the officials from Delhi University had to postpone the date of scheduled interviews. They were given orders from the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and a high-level meeting.
As per the source the university is considering giving 5% relaxation to reserved category students.
The aspirants are questioning that what benefit would relaxation provide to the unreserved category students.
