Amidst the ongoing pandemic situation, several people are facing problems with salaries and wages despite the supportive orders by the government. Subsequently, nearly 4000 teaching and non-teaching staff of the University of Delhi from 12 government-funded colleges have decided to go on a ‘hunger strike’ on Tuesday. They are demanding the payment of salaries.
Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) called for a day-long hunger strike at teacher’s homes on their doorsteps. Besides, they have decided to reach out through tweets and Facebook posts. Rajib Ray said that teachers from 3 out of 12 colleges have not received the salaries even for the complete month of March. “This situation is worsening and we are not ready to accept it”, he added.
“The government, the Vice-Chancellor, and the University administration have had issues over the formation of governing bodies for the last two years but that just does not justify the non-payment of salaries of the teachers and the staff. Why do teachers have to suffer?” said Pankaj Garg, Convenor, INTEC, a former member of the Academic Council.
To support the situation, Former DUSU President and Delhi BJP general secretary Ashish Sood also started a campaign on Twitter #JagoKejriwal. He advocated, “Don’t do politics during such a hard time. Release the salaries to the teachers and staff of the 12 colleges of DU.”
Out of total affiliated colleges, 12 which are fully funded by the government are facing the issue of non-payment of salaries.
