DU Admissions 2020: In the view of the ongoing pandemic, The University had decided to do away with the trials for admission under the Extra-Curricular Activity (ECA) Category, barring National Cadet Corps (NCC) and National Service Scheme (NSS) admissions earlier last month. However, the Standing Committee of Academic Council has now decided to hold admissions to all categories under the ECA quota on the basis of self-attested certificates.
The varsity had earlier decided to conduct spot admissions through the government-approved certificates under the Sports and ECA categories but the unavailability of such certificates prompted the University to scrap the admissions altogether. The move was followed by immense criticism with renowned artists such as Geeta Chandran and Sonal Mansingh demanding that ECA admissions be retained. Most recently, Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu, who is also the DU Chancellor, urged DU to continue with ECA admissions.
The Standing Committee held it’s meeting on Monday, July 20 and a proposal to continue the admissions under the ECA category on the basis of self-attested certificates was brought up, ruling out the trials and also highlighted that the students will be marked out of 100 based on factors like training and participation in competitions.
Although the decision was approved by the Admission Committee and the Standing committee, it was objected by Arun Attree, a member of the standing committee who claimed: “there is no way of authenticating the credibility of the ECA certificates unlike sports because this time there are no government-approved institutions issuing the certificates.” He emphasized on online trials if not physical trials could be conducted, while the other members held their stand that lack of experts and infrastructure was the reason for doing away with offline and online trials both. According to officials, the varsity will revisit the guidelines after the approval of the higher authorities for the same.
