The Delhi High Court reprimanded the University of Delhi on the varsity’s expectation of 70% attendance. Read on to find out.
The Delhi High Court, on Tuesday said that the Delhi University cannot expect students to have 70 per cent minimum attendance to sit for exams. The Court also added that this expectation was not justified if it was not taking classes as per the entire period prescribed for a course.

Additionally, the bench also issued a notice to the Bar Council of India and the University, seeking their stand on the student Abhishek Singh’s appeal of seeking a waiver of short attendance and permission to sit for his first semester examinations. The judge had dismissed the plea on the grounds of the requirement of attaining minimum attendance in professional courses.

On Tuesday, the bench headed by Chief Justice D N Patel, said, “The university and the BCI must come with a mechanism to aid students like the petitioner, who since March 2017 has been suffering from an illness for which there was no clear and certain diagnosis. Institutions must not create a wall.”
According to Abhishek Singh’s lawyer, he was suspected of suffering from typhoid and tuberculosis. During the hearing via video conference, he said that representations were made to the varsity to allow the student to sit for the first semester exams, despite the lack of attendance, in view of his continuing illness. However, no appreciable response came from the university and later he was told that his name would be struck from the rolls. The bench told the student’s lawyer to find out what was the minimum period of study required for LLB course by Delhi University and whether the same was being adhered to.
