1847 Robert Bunsen invents the Bunsen burner
Bunsen with his laboratory assistant Peter Desaga, developed the Bunsen burner, an improvement on the laboratory burners then in use.
1913 The Immigration Act in South Africa
On this day in History, the South African Government pass the Immigration Act, which restricts the entry and free movement of Asians. It leads to widespread agitation and rioting by resident Indians, led by Gandhi.
1922 US President Warren G. Harding is the 1st US President to use radio
Harding becomes the first president to be heard on the radio. On this day in History, President Warren G. Harding, while addressing a crowd at the dedication of a memorial site for the composer of the “Star-Spangled Banner,” Francis Scott Key, becomes the first president to have his voice transmitted by radio.
1940 Auschwitz concentration camp opens in Nazi-controlled Poland with Polish POWs
This very camp Auschwitz got closed in January 1945 with its liberation by the Soviet army. More than 1.1 million people died at Auschwitz, including nearly one million Jews. Those who were not sent directly to gas chambers were sentenced to forced labor.
1942 Anne Frank begins her diary
On this day in History, Anne, a Jewish teenager started writing “The Diary of a Young Girl”, also known as The Diary of Anne Frank. She chronicled her family’s two years (1942–44) in hiding during the German occupation of the Netherlands during World War II in the journal. The book was first published in 1947—two years after Anne’s death in a concentration camp—and later became a classic of war literature.
1949 Bao Dai regime is established
The French-allied State of Vietnam is officially formed during the First Indochina War on this day in history. Bao Dai installed as Emperor.
1973 Oil Crisis
US President Richard Nixon administration imposes a 60-day economy-wide price freeze, superseding Special Rule No. 1 for oil companies.
