The All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), has proposed to stop registering any more engineering colleges from the year 2020. The government committee, headed by BVR Mohan Reddy. the chairman of IIT-Hyderabad, laid down a detailed report, mentioning its observations of various concerns of the existing engineering colleges. According to the committee’s report, more than half the seats had been left vacant since the last few years. Also, corruption cases were found in many colleges. Problems like poor infrastructure, lack of proper faculty and so on, added up to low employment of engineering graduates.

The committee has not only advised AICTE to stop setting up of new engineering colleges, but it has also suggested to stop the addition of new seats in areas of software, electronics, civil engineering etc. Also, AICTE has been advised to align the existing engineering courses with evolving technologies, along with introduction of new and advanced courses like robotics, artificial intelligence etc.

This decision by AICTE has been accepted by the council.
