Bollywood Movies You Should Be Waiting For In 2020

Hello movie buffs! As the New Year and a new decade has knocked in, we have a lot of new expectations about the new beginnings. And being a cinephile, I can’t help but take a peek at what Bollywood has in store for this year.

And interestingly, it seems like Bollywood have some pretty intense and ambitious projects lined up, and the wait is getting harder by the day!

1. Chhapaak

Directed by Meghna Gulzar, starring Deepika Padukone and Vikrant Messy, Chhapaak is based on the life of an acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal and her partner Alok Dixit. The movie portrays the struggles, trials and triumphs of the survivor Malti- from the investigation of the attack to the court proceedings, the medical treatment to the emotional healing. It is the story of the unquashable human spirit.

2. Panga

Directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, Panga starring Kangana Ranaut is inspired from the life of a national level Kabbadi player from India. Rooted in the subculture of societal facts Panga is an emotional roller coaster tale of a middle-class Indian woman; A forgotten kabaddi world champion who catalyzes an inner desire to give a new meaning to her existing role as a wife and mother and takes an ingenious decision to come back to the sport despite the challenges of age stereotypes and a new generation complexities which creates an upheaval in her life as she is torn between family responsibility and love for the sport. It follows her triumphs, struggle and overcoming of stereotypes and reflecting upon the importance of love and family support in order to become successful.

3. Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan

PYAAR vs SANSKAR

Ayushmann is back with a sequel to Subh Mangal Savdhan and cautions everyone to be “zyada savdhan (extra careful).”

After tackling a matter as sensitive as erectile dysfunction in Shubh Mangal Savdhan. This time our all-time sweetheart is tackling the issue of homosexuality and its perceptions in society, with a star cast! Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao, and Jitender Kimar, thus rising our excitement meter. It is delightful to see Bollywood to step up anf deal with complex issues such as homosexuality amidst the orthodox social environment with are living in.

4. Angrezi Medium

Angrezi Medium is a sequel to 2017’s critically acclaimed and commercially successful Hindi medium and marks the return of our beloved Irfan Khan to the silver screen after his battle with terminal illness. It stars Kareena Kapoor presented as a female cop and Radhika Madan as Kuhu, Irfan Khan’s daughter from Hindi Medium who has now grown up and entered an Angrezi medium college.

The storyline is yet not revealed but I expect it to be another bittering reply to our hypocritical society.

Release date : 20th March 2020

5. Sooryavanshi

Releasing just a week after Angrezi Medium, Sooryavanshi is meant to introduce Akshay Kumar as the third cop after Singham starring Ajay Devgn and Simba starring Ranveer Singh. A slight prologue to the film was also seen towards the end of Simba. Starring Katrina Kaif, it is thus the fourth film in the police universe created by Rohit Shetty.

Release date : 27th March 2020

6. ‘83

Releasing on April 10, the much awaited 83 is a biopic of cricketing legend Kapil Dev. Starring Ranveer Singh as the cricketer himself and Deepika Padukone as his wife Romi Dev, the movie has already received a lot of attention thanks to Ranveer Singh’s enthusiasm for the film. Also, it stars Harrdy Sandhu as Madan Lal!

7. Bhuj : The Pride of India

Based on a fascinating true war  time story, set during the Indo-Pak war in 1971 gives us glimpses into the life of IAF Squadron Leader Vijay Karnik (played by Ajay Devgn), the then in-charge of the Bhuj airport who and his team reconstructed the IAF airbase with the help of 300 local Gujrati women.

The movie seems to instill a sense of patriotism in hearts of the audience.

Release date : 14th August 2020

8. Gangubai Kathiawadi

Based on Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai, the movie is about Gangubai Kathiawadi, a brothel owner and the matriarch of Kamathipura. It narrates the story of the protagonist who as a young woman is betrayed into prostitution and later turns into one of its biggest champions — and wealthiest benefactors — but retains a soft spot for young women forced into the trade. With a young talented actress, Alia Bhatt playing the lead role, it will be interesting to see how the movie unfolds.

Release date : 11th September 2020

The movie line up shows that our film makers are now more indulged in portraying real life  heroes and their stories of struggle. Also signifying that they have moved on from the cliche rom-coms and now depicting the real and bringing important social issues in the limelight.
