Carpe Diem, the annual festival hosted by the Sociology Department of Jesus and Mary College, took place on the 17th of October, 2017. This year, being the Golden Jubilee for the college, the festival was even bigger and better than last year. The students of the Sociology department were seen working tirelessly for the whole month, in order to make their fest a success.

JMC was full of students from other colleges, but the sociology department, in their blue and white t shirts, could be easily identified. This year, the opening act was performed by a group known as ‘We are One’, which is a performing group, made up of disabled individuals. Men in wheelchairs, accompanied by deaf girls, performed Indian classical dances such as Bharatnatyam, flawlessly. This group has been on shows such as India’s Got Talent, and the students of JMC were extremely lucky to watch them live.

The next event was a special lecture by Professor Avijit Pathak, a professor at JNU, who spoke on the topic of ‘Seeing Beyond Frozen Printed Words’. He spoke about the joys of studying sociology, and how the correct way to study it. Ending his speech on a high, his comments about how Delhi University gives students way too many readings, resulting in a ‘burden of knowledge’, was popularly received and he was applauded by all present, even the teachers!

The students then dispersed for various events such as the quiz, the debate, and the slam poetry. All these events were successfully conducted.
The finale to a well conducted fest, was a play by the Asmita Theater Group, called ‘Hindu Code Bill’.

This year, Carpe Diem received over eighty entries for each event, and entries had to be short listed. The turnout was amazing, and the whole event went off without a hitch. Next year’s Carpe Diem is much awaited by all, and hopefully it will even better than this years!
