Want to change your stream? Go for it

Hello there. You may have taken up a particular stream ‘maa-baap ke kehne par’ or by your wish in class 12. After studying that stream you may have reached a point where you think you’re done with it. You just can not study that stream any more.

Dear friend, if you are facing such a situation, do not worry. There is a solution to your problem. Change your stream. Yes, I ain’t kidding. I know it is not as easy as it sounds and you will have thousands of questions in your head. I’ve tried answering a few of them. Hope it helps.¬†

WHAT WILL OTHER PEOPLE SAY?

Now what will ‘others’ say is a major concern for most of the students. You feel that people will think you to be a fool. Let me make one thing very clear. It is not ‘others’ who will have to study that stream, in depth, for the next three/four years and choose a career in it for the rest of their lives. It is going to be YOU. So you will be a fool if you think about what ‘others’ will say, and not if you choose to do something that your heart wants.

WHAT ABOUT MY SECURED FUTURE?

Well, let me ask you a few questions. You really think that becoming a doctor or an engineer guarantees you a so called ‘secure’ future?¬† Who gave you that guarantee? Your parents or some baba who predicts your future? You’re living in the 21st century my friend. Think from a broader perspective. Live in the present, not the future. (When i say that, I mean it.) Every stream has its own scope. Before taking up a course, study what is the scope in that field and if you really fit into one of the jobs in that field.

WHAT ABOUT MONEY?

If you are doing something that you love, you will feel like doing your work. With time, you will get better at whatever you do. When you become better at work, you will get paid better. So money shouldn’t be an issue.¬†

HOW DO I CONVINCE MY PARENTS?

Every parent wishes for their child’s happiness. The reason they want you to take up a particular stream is because they want your happiness in the long- run. They do not want you to face any hardships in future. However, you must try to explain it to them that if you don’t like what you’re doing, then how will you be happy in the future? Explain them the future prospects in the field you’re looking at and also make them believe that it’s your passion and you will definitely excel in it. Ultimately, I’m sure they will understand what you’re trying to say. And so all will be well.

So if you’re a science person who wants to take up political science or a commerce person who wants to take up journalism (and so on), then go for it. You only live once, YOLO. So why not make the most of it? All the best!¬†
