Courses at DU : B.A. History (Hons)

Degree in social sciences is the most underrated undergraduate course ,especially if it’s¬†Honours in History.Unlike UG degree in many courses like B.Tech., Business economics, being graduate does not land you a job if you are a graduate in history. History hons is basically a first step towards the long struggle you will need to do with patience. But doing post graduation do land you with a goof secure job.Career choices after doing graduation in history are
1.The most followed way after Graduation with hons in History is competitive exams like SSC, UPSC or IBPS/Bank PO where not only minimum eligible criteria is UG but history is helpful in these exams.
2. After pursuing your bachelors in History, you can go on to study archaeology and make a career out of it. Archaeologists are needed for excavations at various places and if you love travelling and a history lover then it’s the best job for you.
3. If you want to teach at secondary level i.e. class 6th to class 10th, you may go for B. Ed. and if you wish to teach at senior secondary level i.e. 11th and 12th, you would have to do Masters in History. To teach at university level Masters in History with NET is required (many universities prefer Ph.D or M.Phil too)
4.You can go on to pursue a specialization in Art History and work with museums and art galleries to restore paintings and other art forms. This occupation came in limelight after Deepika Padukone was seen restoring old monuments in the movie Love Aaj Kal. The basic job is to restore and preserve already existing works of art like painting, sculptures and monuments which have been damaged or deteriorated. But as easy as it sounds, the job requires the utmost amount of historical knowledge and precision with patience and attention. There is a specialization in the particular field during the post-graduation.
5. If you love the ambiance and amazing artifacts of a museum, you can actually become a museum curator. As a museum curator, you will be dealing directly with the collection of artifacts, their display, research on various different artifacts and objects and provide information to the general public. There are various colleges which provide specialization in the field during the post-graduation.
6.With increase in production of period movies and TV serials like Shivaji, Maharana Pratap there is demand of people with History background who can do research for costumes, jewelery, background set and culture-customs. You may join production house as Research Assistant.
History is a subject to hatred by many students but it itself offers a variety of streams like European history, Ancient history, Colonial history etc.,and specialization in each of them. It is an all theory subject with much research to d done but as it is said , ‘ Whatever your course is, if you are good at it , you’ll excel’.
