Professors at 12 Delhi University colleges that are funded by the Delhi government undermined a “total shutdown of the Delhi University” and hit the roads in protest on Sunday. They averred not received salaries for as far back as four months.
Officials at the government-funded colleges alleged they hadn’t received grants for the fourth quarter supposed to be released in November, and due to this they were struggling to pay salaries to their staff since December. On Sunday, teachers from different colleges also alleged to not have been paid regular salaries since 2019. Nearly 1,200 teachers at these colleges were finding it difficult to make ends meet.
According to The Hindustan Times, during the press conference on Sunday, the teachers also pointed out their inability to pay medical bills, scholarships, telephone and electricity bills. “Officials at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College (DDU) said they were served a notice by the south civic body last month after it failed to pay its pending property tax dues of ₹3 crore,” reported the times.
These 12 colleges which are affiliated with the Delhi University and are fully funded by the Delhi government are:
- Acharya Narendra Dev College
- Bhim Rao Ambedkar College
- Bhaskaracharya College of Applied Science
- Bhagini Nivedita College
- DeenDayal Upadhyaya College
- Aditi Mahavidyalaya Women’s College
- Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education & Sports Sciences
- Keshav Mahavidyalaya
- Maharaja Agrasen College (DU)
- Maharshi Valmiki College of Education
- Shaheed Rajguru College of Sciences for Women
- Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies.
The Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) on Tuesday called for a university “shutdown” from March 11 to address the aforementioned issues. They held the executive meeting of DUTA on Tuesday to discuss the “crisis faced by teaching and non-teaching staff in twelve DU colleges that are 100% funded colleges for the last 14 months”.
While conversing with India Tv, DUTA president Rajib Ray said in a statement.
“In many units employees have not received salaries for over 6 months now. Employees have also not received other dues.”
The meeting also addressed the recent merger of the College of Art with Ambedkar University Delhi, and the unaddressed concerns over the same.
