Is Delhi University over-hyped?

Delhi University, being a central University has always been an eye-catcher. It has gained popularity.

Being a DUite, I am well aware of the fact that DU is a brand. People are drawn by the brand name.

I agree Delhi University is overrated.

But the reasons for this over-hype are quite genuine.

Let us have a look.

 

  1. Sky touching cut-offs

DU cut-offs are always in news for being impossible to achieve. Its high-ends cut-offs always shock the nation. People believe that everyone studying here is a brilliant student. It may not be true but that is what our relatives believe.

  1. Cultural Diversity

You can find students from almost all possible corners of India in the colleges of DU. The cultural Diversity are huge over here. Though seats are not reserved for Delhi students but DU gives 5% reservation to foreign students.

  1. Vishvavidayalay Metro Station

The University has its own metro station dedicated to it-“Vishvavidayalay Metro Station”. So even if you are clueless about DU (which is next to impossible) and travel in yellow line, you’ll probably read this unconsciously.

  1. Societies of DU

The extracurricular societies of DU offer a wide range of activities covering diverse interests like Indian Classical Music, Dance, Debating, Theatre etc. These societies are extremely talented, so they shine bright in Delhi as well as in other competitions.

  1. Notable Alumni

DU has been an Alma mater of people from almost every possible field from acting, arts, science, and so on. Amitabh Bachchan, Shahnaz Hussain, Narendra Modi, Nandita Das are some of the well known personalities graduated from DU.

How one can forget about elections when talking about DU. It is the place where one gets a chance to cast their vote before the age of 18. Also, the elections here are led by the college level associations of national level party. The election season is better termed as the festive season of DUites.

The fests in colleges of DU have always been the talk of the town. It has been an attraction to media and are a big crowd-puller.

One can witness celebrities like Sunidhi Chauhan, Varun Dhawan, Shankar Ehsaan Loy performing in the fests. The fests of DU are often referred as “Harbingers of Excitement”.
