A post has gone viral on social media which consists of a page from the book of B.A.Sociology course from St.Joseph’s College of Bengaluru. The book has the following paragraph¬†‚ÄúTHE MARRIAGE OF UGLY GIRLS WHO WOULD OTHERWISE HAVE GONE WITHOUT A PARTNER, IS MADE POSSIBLE BY OFFERING HEAVY AMOUNT OF DOWRY‚Äù. The point here is that the class consists of 60 students and not one student or a faculty member opposed this.
Giving or receiving dowry is a punishable offence under the Dowry Prohibition Act.Young people should be educated about this illicit practice but its shameful to teach the students this as an advantage of the dowry system. Recebtly a book of English in Delhi University was in the headlines for comparing a good email with a short skirt and before that a book of nursery kids had dark-complexion women defined as ‘ugly’and fair women as ‘beautiful ‘.
The book also consists of the following paragraph under the advantage of dowry,
‚ÄúDOWRY INCREASES THE STATUS OF WOMEN IN THE FAMILY. IT AFFECTS THE LOVE AND AFFECTION HER HUSBAND BEARS FOR HER.”
It is shameful to see the status of the education system of India. Our country was itself trapped in the illicit practices of Sati,child marriage,female infanticide and the mentioned book tells the advantage of dowry from the view of its supporters. Why will the students need to learn that?
