Last month,Delhi University Students Union launched the gender sensitisation cell which is abided to create a safe atmosphere and protecting students from sexual harassment or gender discrimination and provide them with the legal aid and advise but it seems like the number of sexual harassment cases in the university aren’t just limited to students.
In the last 10 days, two sexual harassment cases cropped up at Daulat Ram College & Bharti College and one former guest teacher of Swami Shraddhanand College has filed an FIR against a college principal over alleged sexual harassment.
To reduce the number of sexual harassment cases in university, acting proctor Neeta Sehgal sent a letter to all colleges on February 9,asking them to hold polls to elect three student representatives in Internal Complaints Committee(ICC) as per University Grants Commission (UGC) rules.”The university had in April last year instructed all colleges to form an internal complaints committee as per the UGC Regulations, 2015 on Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal of Sexual Harassment of Women Employees and Students in Higher Educational Institutions.Though most colleges had an ICC but many of them did not have elected student representatives” she said.
The University noted that the composition of ICC is not in accordance with the guidelines in many colleges.
On February 9th,University has written to all colleges to conduct elections for ICC.But,those colleges which have elected members need not conduct elections again.
As per the university guidelines, the last date for nomination is February 23 after which the final list will be announced on February 27.The election will be held on March 12.
