Did you face a problem connecting to WhatsApp or Facebook on the college wifi today while  gmail and google worked tremendously fast?

Well it’s not just your college that has put a ban on social media access but it’s the entire Delhi University. Every college in Delhi University, which is receiving¬†Wifi from the common central agency, will now have to face the consequences of this call. It has been confirmed and reconfirmed by student unions across different colleges that this is not done at the college level but has been done by the Delhi University itself.

Boys and girls around different colleges are already angry from this step of the university and are planning to write a petition against it. While many students feel that the use of snapchat maybe unnecessary but they simultaneously feel that WhatsApp is an important medium through which every student of the college is connected. Disabling something as vital as WhatsApp will affect information dissemination across class groups, as well as society groups. This is an important aspect of the issue which the DU authorities definitely did not take into account while taking such a strong stance of blocking the social media.

Some students are hoping that it’s a technical glitch and have high hopes that it will all be okay in the next two-three days. Some strongly believe that not all students can afford data packs and this will cut them from the well established network of communication across colleges and in college. Others have already written letters because after all an internet connection is an integral part of any educational institution. Isn’t it?
