DU defers its decision to reopen the university

the University of Delhi on Thursday 5th August 2021 released an official notice (read it here) where it announced the reopening of the colleges for UG and PG students enrolled in Science courses. The notice came as a hope for students sitting at home and attending online classes since March 2020. The colleges were to re-open from 16th August for Science students. The students enrolled in Arts and Commerce courses had to wait.

Another notice came in as a blow on Friday 6th August 2021 overruling the earlier notice. The University in the new notice mentions that the reopening of college classes has been deferred for now. The postponement takes away all the hope of starting academia in a physical space again. The notice also says that any other guidelines mentioned in the August 5 notice remain the same. The classes stand deferred until further notice.

POSSIBILITIES

The change in the decision may be because of a possibility of a third wave of COVID or the unreadiness of the University to open in a physical mode very soon. There is also a possibility that the university may have received requests from students to extend the reopening. The idea comes from the fact that in a 10-day notice, it may be difficult for students living in states across India to arrive in Delhi. There may be state restrictions or other hurdles. The hope of attending college especially for those in their final year came and went away.

The notice is issued with the approval of a competent authority. Let us all hope for things to get back to normal and colleges to reopen.
