DDMA Relaxes Restrictions, Allows Colleges and Schools to Re-Open

After Friday’s meeting, the DDMA announced a relaxation in pandemic restrictions, allowing Delhi colleges and schools to be fully functional. According to Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, all colleges, ITIs, polytechnics, and skill institutes are required to go offline. This would be with immediate effect starting this week. This means an immediate restarting of offline classes for students of government-run campuses in Delhi. Ambedkar University, Delhi Technological University, and colleges affiliated with Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University will fall under this category.

Furthermore, as per an education department official, institutes will no longer be required to maintain 50% of classroom or laboratory capacity at any given moment. Officials at DU have cited the DDMA’s 50% mandate as the primary reason for keeping offline theory classes suspended during the pandemic.

DU Might Consider Re-Opening Soon

According to DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh, the university will now look into the possibilities of reopening with this adjustment. If a careful consideration of the guidelines allows DU to reopen without conditions, they will do so without hesitation. Additionally, the university would like to give the outstation students a reasonable notice period in case of reopening of 7, 10, or 15 days.

The university has so far limited its reopening to final year students’ access to the library and labs for practicals. All theory classes have continuously been online since the pandemic began. While the university is still waiting for the DDMA’s order, AUD PRO Anshu Kumar stated they have begun prepping the campus for reopening. JNU officials are yet to react to questions about possible reopening plans. However, JMI might be on track to reopening as well. Its officials are currently awaiting further instructions from the University Grants Commission.
