Delhi University teachers showered rage for the Vice Chancellor and a large scale demonstration was held near his office. The reason behind this outburst from DUTA is the delay in releasing confirmation letters to its members even after the successful completion of the specified 12-months probation period. A number of teachers from various departments have called it a matter of significant violation of the University statues and ordinances.
DUTA President, Nandita Narain said,”Teachers are being unduly harassed and denied their right to confirmation. While it was noted that some teachers have received the demanded letters, the DUTA reiterates its demand that there be no further delay in issue of confirmation letters and the harassment meted out to the teachers by the administration in one grab or another stop.”
According to annexure 1-A to Ordinance XI of the DU Act, the probation period is categorically defined at twelve months and the same can be extended only in exceptional situations wherein the Executive Council has to decide on the extension and inform teachers before the termination of eleven months after appointment.
“There has been no intimidation before the expiry of the eleven months”, said DUTA Secretary Sandeep.
WHAT NOW?
After raising this issue several times and facing similar disappointment each time, DUTA has now called for a Pen-Down Strike on June 7 along with a public meeting and dharna between 11AM and 2PM outside the Arts faculty gate, North Campus. This means that the teachers will come to work but will not do any work.
This can be a major problem for the University as the Admission Season has just started to gain momentum and exams have just ended. If the appeals of DUTA are not met or no way is paved to satisfy their wants then it can lead to a state of great turmoil for the varsity.
