Ex-Delhi CM and Senior Congress Leader Sheila Dikshit Passes Away

Three-time Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit passed away on Saturday 20th July at the age of 81. She breathed her last 3.55 pm in Delhi’s Fortis Escorts Heart Institute. She was admitted to the hospital earlier today in a critical condition with cardiac arrest.

Dr Ashok Seth, director, Escorts Fortis told news agency ANI “Sheila Dikshit was managed well by a team of doctors. At 3:15 pm she again suffered a cardiac arrest. She was put on ventilator and at 3:55 pm she passed away peacefully.”

Sheila Dikshit was the President of Delhi Congress and was the longest serving chief minister of Delhi who held the national capital’s top job for 15 years (1998-2013). She was born on 31 March 1938 in Punjab’s Kapurthala.

Sheila Dikshit’s administrative skills were first noticed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who also nominated her as an Indian envoy to a United Nations Commission on Status of Women between. She served in the UN commission during 1984 and 1989.

In 1986, she became a Union Minister and held two portfolios during her tenure, first as the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and later as a Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office.

She emerged victorious in Delhi Assembly held in 1998 and was named Delhi Chief Minister for the first time. She went on to hold Delhi’s highest office for three consecutive terms until Aam Admi Party’s (AAP’s) Arvind Kejriwal dethroned her in 2013.

Sheila Dikshit also served as the Governor of Kerala in 2013 but resigned after five months.

The Delhi government has announced two-day state mourning in view of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s death today.
