Ragging is any chaotic conduct whether spoken, written or by any act which causes annoyance, hardship or psychological harrasment to a student. It is generally committed by senior students upon the freshers.

The accurate meaning of the word ‘ragging’ is ‘to tease’, but even the dictionary says it is a obsolete meaning.

Ragging has ruined countless innocent lives and careers. In order to eradicate it,Hon’ble Supreme Court in Civil Appeal No. 887 of 2009, passed the judgement wherein guidelines were issued for setting up of a Central Crisis Hotline and Anti-Ragging database.

The University of Delhi is a ragging free zone.Nobody is allowed to pursue any mischief and rag juniors. If in some colleges, seniors come and interact with the juniors then that is just to strike a conversation between the experienced and the ones new to experience.

Here is a list of measures taken by DU to curb ragging-

Joint Control Rooms : The Delhi Police, DTC and Delhi Metro decided that the university will set up two joint control rooms — one in North Campus and the other in South Campus to deal with any instance of ragging.

Strict Vigil : Colleges and hostels have been asked to restrict entry of outsiders and keep a vigil at all eating joints inside the campus. It has also been decided that police demonstrators will be placed outside every college to deal with any act of indiscipline and ragging. The police will patrol the campus to take speedy action in case of any untoward incident on campus.

The police said women personnel in plain clothes will be deployed at the university to nab those who indulge in eve-teasing or ragging.

Besides deployment of women police officers in civilian clothes, the University has also asked for deployment of martial arts-trained women security personnel at ‘sensitive places’ in and around the university.
