Guns, Goons & Governance: Welcome to पश्चिम बंगाल

Hours after Mamta Banerjee managed to cut down the mustard for the third time in West Bengal; guns, goons, and governance all three were seen simultaneously during the eruption of political violence. Moreover, at least fourteen people have passed away during the violence.

While some are labelling this as the “victory violence” of Mamta Banerjee, others are calling this the “ugly dance of democracy”.

BJP’S AVERMENTS 

BJP has claimed that the goons have burnt down several party offices including one at Nandigram, from where the party’s candidate Suvendu Adhikari defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The BJP said that six of its workers were among those killed and that “TMC goons” attacked and vandalized several of its offices, including one in Nandigram where the party’s candidate Suvendu Adhikari defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Adhikari’s car was also attacked in Nandigram, the party said. (Source: The Indian Express, 04.02.2021)

Likewise, BJP candidates like Swapan Dasgupta were seen tweeting the party’s “ring of truth”.

Abhijit Sarkar, 35, was beaten to death, hours after BJP got down in defeat in the May 2 counting. Above all, his 62-yr-old mother, and brother were also beaten up, while their house was ransacked, by unidentified men. The family said police were present but didn’t stop the men.

In the same vein, the family of a BJP worker named Haran Adhikari said that around 8 pm on Sunday, a group of miscreants barged into their house. They dragged Adhikari out and thrashed him to death.

Being up in arms, BJP declared a nationwide dharna against this political violence.

Moreover, BJP is seen declaring a list of 24 incidents across the state in which its workers were targeted. It also separately listed the party workers killed: Shova Rani Mondal (Jagaddal, North 24 Parganas); Uttam Ghosh (Ranaghat, Nadia); Abhijit Sarkar (Beliaghat, Kolkata); Horom Adhikari (Sonarpur Dakshin, South 24 Parganas); Momik Moitra (Sitalkuchi, Cooch Behar); and, Gourab Sarkar (Bolpur, Birbhum). TMC’S DENIAL | GUNS, GOONS & GOVERNANCE

Trinamool Congress, on the other hand, is denying the allegations.

Blaming the BJP for violence, Mamta Banerjee spoke on how a TMC worker was beaten to death. In addition, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh threw light on the fallout of the intra-BJP rivalry leading to such incidents.

According to the report, TMC supporters including Srinibas Ghosh, Saju Sheikh, and Bibhash Pal, were killed in Jamalpur on Monday in clashes with the BJP. TMC East Burdwan spokesperson Prasenjit Das said, “They were killed brutally. BJP supporters surrounded them and beat them up. Three others were seriously injured.” Police claimed to have arrested 11 people for the incident on Tuesday. (Source: The Indian Express)

The fourth TMC leader reported killed was Ganesh Malik, 60, of Samsabad village in Raina. As per his family, he was hit when trying to stop a clash between TMC and BJP supporters.

HOLDING ALL THE ACES: THE CENTRE

Consequently, the central government, as of now, has asked for a report on the post-poll violence targeting opposition political workers in the state.
