Hansraj College Students Stopped From Protesting Against CAA,Later Moves To Cafeteria To Sing National Anthem

When the sound Azaadi is echoing in different parts of the country, more and more Universities are joining the wagon to express solidarity and dissent. On 13th Jan, 2020 many DU colleges such asĀ  Jesus and Mary College, Kamala Nehru College held protests and formed human chains against brutality with students and CAA-NRC.

Similarly, a reading of Preamble,Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago speech and Tagore’s ‘Where the mind is without fear’ was planned to be held at Lover’s Point in Hansraj College.However, things didn’t go as planned as the protesting students were stopped by the administration. National flags and posters were taken away from the gathering and the students were dispersed within no time. Not only was the voice of dissent disrupted but also an art exhibition which was to be held in the campus was stopped.To everyone’s surprise, no such intervention was registered during a pro-CAA demonstration held in the college ground on the same day.

After the turn of events at Lover’s point, protesting students gathered in the cafeteria. At 12:50 PM, a reading of the preamble and national anthem sung in unison echoed in the campus.Despite every effort by the administration to suppress them, students still managed to register their dissent peacefully.

Meanwhile, on the same day, a third year student at Hansraj College was assaulted by a faculty member. Students have filed a complaint with the Principal regarding the same. To which the principal asked the students to wait for two days and assured that a disciplinary committee is looking into the matter.

Students wore black clothes and protested against CAA – NRC by reading preamble and singing the National Anthem on 15th January as well, without any intervention from the administration this time.
