Instagram initiatives: From household businesses to help groups

Since the lockdown in March and its subsequent opening, an average Instagram user could observe a rise in the number of student-led Instagram initiatives on the platform. From blogging to selling homemade foodstuffs or crafts, to organizations working for the society. One can find them all.  In contrast to the on-ground organizations working in various fields, these are social media pages being run by students seeking to make a mark.

COMING UP OF INITIATIVES

The coronavirus pandemic has left us with a lot of time on our hands. This is especially true for the student community as educational institutions would be the last to reopen. It has presented them with an opportunity to delve deeper into their hobbies and to hone their skills. People have also been using the platform for helping others. This has come in the midst of a crisis when inequalities have become glaringly evident.

BENEFITS OF INSTAGRAM INITIATIVES; FROM THE INDIVIDUAL TO THE SOCIETY

As a method to pass the time afforded by the pandemic these initiatives are keeping youngsters busy. But it is not only for the benefit of the students’ resume. Due to loss of jobs, many have been earning through these side businesses and contributing to household expenses.  Students have also been helping out the less privileged or the disadvantaged during this period. From fundraisers to providing educational and material support, many initiatives have been successfully carried out.

THE FUTURE; FUNCTIONS POST THE PANDEMIC

A number of school and college students are mobilizing people around themselves and spreading awareness on issues that matter, adding to the family living and helping others. This unprecedented crisis of 2020 has brought out the best in many. These actions have had an impact on many individuals and groups within society. Still what needs to be thought of at this juncture is whether these innumerable Instagram pages which have provided a platform to students to reach out to others will still be functional once things return to normal.

Will they continue to operate or be left behind like all trends are? With the gradual opening of schools and colleges all across the country, will the creative and altruistic students have enough time on their hands?  Would the return to their “normal” lives leave these pages defunct with only their earlier posts to serve as memories of what was achieved and how many lives were touched?
