With the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi almost touching the “severe category”, Kailash Satyarthi, a Noble Peace Laureate wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, appealing him to amend the “Air Act- 1981” which states that the Parliament of India must prevent and control air pollution in India. In fact, he also gave an idea to the Prime Minister that, in order to tackle air pollution we must come up with a five year national action plan to ensure clean air for the citizens.

On the occasion of Children’s Day, Satyarthi was to take part in an event but because of severe pollution, it got cancelled. Therefore, after seeing how the degrading air quality was affecting the day-to-day life functioning of people, the Noble Peace Laureate wrote a letter to the Prime Minister of India.

Satyarthi in his letter wrote, “All of us, the policy makers, businessmen and businesswoman, consumers and common people have to take urgent and drastic steps to ensure that air, water and land remain clean and sustainable for the future. We need genuine and collective commitment from all parts of government, politicians, industry and society to create a stronger and coherent framework to tackle air, water and land pollution.”

Also, with regard to the degrading environment, Satyarthi also wrote, “We need a strong new action plan as soon as possible. We must build a comprehensive, accountable and binding strategy to tackle the pollution (be it of air, water or land) that claims lives. And, there’s no doubt that our comfort would be disrupted, but in order to have a better future we must start working for our environment.”
