The number of ‘recovered’ cases exceeded the number of ‘active’ cases for the first time since the outbreak of coronavirus outbreak in India on Wednesday.

50,61,332 were carried out so far, of which 1,45,216 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. About 5,991 patients were cured of the disease in the last 24 hours. It takes the total number of patients recovered to 1,35,205. On the other hand, the number of active cases is now about 1,33,632. The number of recovered patients has exceeded the active cases for the first time. The health ministry in a statement said that the recovery rate currently stands at 48.88%.

While 1,35,205 people have recovered (94.5%), 7,745 people have died from an analysis of the 1,42,950 ‘closed cases.’ 274 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours 9,985 new cases have been registered. It takes the total case count to 2,76,583. 50,61,332 tests have been carried out so far. 1,45,216 of those samples were tested in the last 24 hours.
However, experts believe that these comparisons of the cumulative data of active and recovered cases do not give a correct picture of the pandemic’s course. The number of deaths daily can be considered a more reliable metric.

Dr. K Srinath Reddy, who is a member of the ICMR COVID task force, and President, Public Health Foundation of India, said that period that has been taken into consideration would determine whether it is a significant statistic or not. It does not matter much if the focus is on the cumulative figures. However, it would be significant enough if the death rate starts coming down.

On the international front, countries like Spain and Italy are opening up as the death rate has witnessed a consistent dip. Dr. K Srinath Reddy said that the recovery rate is meaningful at any stage of the epidemic. It includes reports that are based on closed cases, rather than all cases – many of whom may still be on the road to recovery.

World Health Organisation has cautioned that it is not the time for complacency even though the gap between recovered and active cases is narrowing. Although Americas and South Asia account for 75% of the cases while improvements are being seen in Europe, it does not change the fact that most people globally are still susceptible to the virus.

Meanwhile, several teams are being deputed in Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru to provide technical support to municipal health officials and state health departments. Within a week, the teams will visit these cities to review public health measures being undertaken for Covid-19.
