Delhi University is about to choose the new office bearers for the new session. The University is littered with posters and promises of the candidates contesting the Delhi University Student’s Union (DUSU) elections.

DUSU elections have always been famous and are known to produce some great leaders and politicians.Let us throw some light on some DUSU Presidents who made a name for themselves in Indian Politics.

1. Arun Jaitley : The current Minister of Finance Minister in Government of India,he studied B.Com from Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) and completed LLB from Faculty of Law.He was a member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and became the President of DUSU in 1974.

2. Vijay Goel : He is alumnus of SRCC who became the DUSU President in 1977. He is currently serving as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs.

3. Ajay Maken : He studied B.Sc Chemistry (Hons).He was the General Secretary of Indian National Congress till 2015. He was elected as the President of DUSU in 1985.

4. Alka Lamba : She was a member of Congress party for 20 years.She quit the party in 2013 and became a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).She is a former President of National Students Union of India (NSUI) and was the President of DUSU in 1995.

5. Anil Jha Vats : He is a member of the BJP and was a former member of the Delhi Legislative Assembly.He was the President of DUSU in 1997.

6. Vijay Jolly : He was a former member of ABVP and is currently a member of BJP.He was elected as the President of DUSU in 1980.

7. Nupur Sharma : She was a former student activist for BJP and a member of ABVP.She is the official spokesperson for BJP’s Delhi Unit.She served as the DUSU President for 2008.

Well there is a long list of Indian politicians who started their political career from students union elections.Some important names include Shashi Tharoor,Meira Kumar,Sachin Pilot, Krishna Tirath,Ambika Soni,Salman Khurshid,Kapil Sibal and Virbhadra Singh.

DUSU election acts as a stepping stone for aspiring politicians as it provides a doorway to directly enter the Indian politics.There are many leaders who were once a part of DUSU and now have occupied an important position and portfolios in the government.DUSU makes it easy to enter the Indian Politics for all those students who want to go in this field.
