Students Protest At Bharati College Against Teacher Involved In Sexual Harassment

Students protested at DU’s Bharati College on Wednesday alleging that the Governing Body (GB) was not following the recommendations of the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) in a sexual harassment case against a teacher.The ICC, submitted its report on August 28, has suggested compulsory retirement for the accused.

Around 150 students held a protest within the college premises on Wednesday against the alleged delay by the Governing Body in taking action on the ICC’s recommendations in the case.

While college authorities decided to suspend the accused in June but they were not given final approval by varsity authorities.Students on Wednesday protested that even after eight months, the GB had not taken any decision with regard to the ICC recommendation.

ICC presiding officer, Rakhi Jain was quoted as saying ‚ÄúWe submitted our recommendations on August 28 to the university. Students are angry because in June, the GB had suspended the teacher, but the University did not send its approval. He‚Äôs not coming to college, but he‚Äôs getting his full salary. So there is some resentment among students because of this and because the ICC recommendations¬†haven’t been followed‚Äù

The Governing Body issued a show cause notice to the professor and his response has been received.

According to media reports, on Monday, the Governing Body will study his reply and in all likelihood finalise a decision.After the Governing Body takes a decision about the action to be taken against the professor, it will send a report to the varsity’s authorities for approval.

The Governing Body had also met on October 6 where the accused professor had presented his side of the story and pleaded innocence.The ICC had recommended compulsory retirement for the accused professor and the Governing Body had endorsed the findings of the ICC in its meeting but had decided to take a final call later this month.

Governing Body Chairman, Ajay Gaur was quoted as saying “The matter is under process and we will take care of our students.‚Äù
