Technical issues persist in DU Open Book Examinations

The online Open Book Examinations (OBEs) were taken by around 32,000 students(both undergraduate and postgraduate) of Delhi University (DU). However, it seems that the process was not exceptionally efficient. There have been several claims by the students that they faced quite a number of issues while uploading their answer sheets on the University portal.

The University has clearly stated that it had to resort to the online OBEs for the final year students due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as they were left with hardly any option. This decision, was, however, opposed by both students and teachers. They have, for long, been requesting that the students be promoted based on their performance in the previous semesters as well as their internal assignments.

On the first day of the examination, many technical glitches arose as the students tried to upload the answer sheets. The problems did not subside on the second day as well. The common service centers of DU stated that only some students who faced issues while uploading their answer sheets are availing the Open Book Examinations (OBE) services.

Students in different parts of the country faced similar issues which included blanked web pages due to power outage, no acknowledgment receipts by the University after mailing the answer sheets, and network issues among many others.

The Joint director of Delhi University’s Computer Center, Professor Sanjeev Singh, stated that students might have faced difficulties due to a lot of data traffic at the end of the exam when all the students were busy uploading their answer sheets. However, students can mail their answer sheets to the University as well, he said.

When queries were raised regarding the student’s claims that they did not receive acknowledgment mails, Mr. Singh responded that the acknowledgment mails might have been delayed by a mere five minutes. Another official stated that even the University was accepting answer sheets, even if there was a delay in the submission.
