1918—World War I ended

World War I ended
This painting depicts the signing of the armistice which ended World War I in Compiegne, France

At 5:00 am on this day in 1918, the Allied powers and Germany signed an armistice document in the railway carriage of Ferdinand Foch, the commander of the Allied armies, and six hours later World War I came to an end. With 17 million casualties, the First World War was one of the bloodiest conflicts in history.

1992— The Church of England approves the ordination of female priests

Rhodesia, a region that is comprised of present-day Zimbabwe declared its freedom from the United Kingdom under the leadership of predominantly white leaders. It lasted for 14 years when it was renamed the Republic of Zimbabwe after being recognized by the UN and the UK.

1975—Angola gained independence

Angola gained its independence after over 300 years of Portuguese rule.
