Law faculty of DU has always been famous for its law courses because they do not apparently burn a big hole in the student’s pocket and also claim to offer quality education in premier institutions but lately things have changed a lot in this coveted campus. People use these prized seats just as a backup while they prepare for other competitive exams. A number of students either do not show up right after the admission or drop out of the course midway.
The recent plea filed in the Delhi High Court highlights this grave concern where almost 500- 700 ie 30‚ÑÖ of the seats in the faculty are just wasted every year. The plea was filed by the second year law student of Campus Law Centre, DU.
The petition seeks the joint efforts of the university, law faculty and Bar Council of India in this regard. It demands that the students must either be admitted on a mandatory bond of five lakh rupees or an appropriate amount must be taken from students before taking up the course. The petition also claims that the predictable pattern of semester exams was ruining the talent of the students as they bank upon dukki’s ( law guide books) for clearing up the semesters rather than studying the comprehensive case material provided to them. A bench of Delhi High Court judges Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C. Hari Shankar directed the plea to be listed on February 5 before an appropriate bench.
Well whatever the result of this petition may be, it certainly points out a grave anomaly in the law campus. The question that looms large is that wastage of seats in a premier institutions has come to light in a country where every year a lot of students give up on their passion because of unavailability of seats.
