On Tuesday High Court and National Green Tribunal expressed their anxiety over the massive use of pamphlets,flyers, and plastering of Delhi University walls for the upcoming Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) polls.
Delhi Police and Civic bodies are asked by the High Court to file a petition seeking a complete ban on alleged defacement of public properties by DUSU candidates. A bench of acting Chief Justice Geeta Mittal and Justice C. Hari Shankar inquired, why no actions have been taken yet.  Also, NGT strongly objected for violation of its order which restrained the students from defacing the classroom and campus walls.
The High Court Bench directed  DU, the Delhi Police,the municipal corporations, the New Delhi Municipal Council and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporations(DMRC) to place their stand before it in one week for allegedly not taking any action against the said violation and illegal act.
A Public Interest Litigation filed by advocate Prashant Manchanda alleges that disruption of classrooms and campus by candidates opposes the idea of Right to Life, Liberty, and Education of the students.¬†He asked the civic bodies to impose heavy penalties on political parties and candidates. ” The illegal and destructive activities by student¬†political organisations and ¬†DUSU candidates at present is a sad commentary on our education system. ¬†If left unchecked,¬†it will cause further disruption to the tranquillity and cleanliness of our city, it added.
The PIL said these unwanted damages add unnecessary burden on the taxpayers. It further added that the distasteful display of ugliness spread across the city and public places lead to a negative impact on the environment and also the dignity of our country before foreign tourists.
We at DU Express request the candidates to not to indulge in such brazen acts to seek votes which are leading to environmental degradation and causing harm to the dignity of our country.
