Reservation for Delhi students in Delhi University is an old promise made by many political parties during the time of elections but the issue always gets lost once elections get over. But for the first time ever this issue has been raised by leaders of the political parties currently in power.Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Bharatiya Janata Party’s Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Goel might soon meet HRD Minister Smriti Irani to discuss the issue of Higher Education in Delhi.

Vijay Goel met Manish Sisodia on Saturday and demanded that 85% seats in 28 Delhi government funded colleges be reserved for Delhi students. He suggested that a 5% advantage should be given to Delhi students in cutoffs as well. Vijay Goel offered to jointly visit Smriti Irani with Manish Sisodia, who said he will consider the suggestion.

“We understand there is a gap that needs to be filled. But giving preference to Delhi students is not enough. Already 30,000 students in DU are from Delhi and adding another 1,500 students will not affect any equations. The solution is to start new affiliating universities in the city to cater to the huge demand. For this, amendments to the Delhi University Act need to be made. If Goel feels that Irani has a positive outlook towards this demand, I have no problem meeting her along with him,” Mr Manish Sisodia said in a statement.

The long-standing demand for reservation may however be a difficult one to fulfill since Delhi University is a Central university where state based reservation can’t be followed.

State universities such as Ambedkar University, Delhi Technological University, Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology and Guru Gobind Singh IP University reserve seats for students who complete Class 12 from Delhi.

According to Vijay Goel’s memorandum to Sisodia, more than two lakh students pass Class 12th in Delhi every year but they are unable to get admission in Delhi University because there is no reservation for Delhi students.

Vijay Goel also said that there should be a benefit of 5% in Delhi University cutoffs for Delhi students during Under Graduate admissions.

When asked about the recent case of students topping the Bihar Board Exams without even knowing about their subjects, Vijay Goel said there should be an entrance exam for admission to premier universities and colleges of the country to avoid such problems.

Reservation for Delhi students in Delhi University is an issue of great debate as Delhi University being a Central University cannot give special status to Delhi just because its located here doing so will be unfair to students of other states who dream of studying in Delhi University and leading a better life in Delhi.

We’ll keep you updated with all the latest developments related to the Reservation Issue as every student would be keeping a close watch on this issue for different reasons.
