Moving out of parents house for studies can be exciting and daunting at the same time. Most students view it as an opportunity to become independent as they gain the liberty to go out with their friends whenever they like and can do whatever they want without their parent’s approval. It’s a dream come true for many!
Initially, students are very confident that they’ll be able to manage everything on their own efficiently and punctually. However, they soon start to realize that living alone isn’t as fun as they expected it to be due to various reasons.
Here are a few things that happen when students embark upon their PG/ Hostel life:
- THEY START TO REALIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF MONEY
Every student dreams to spend money on his favorite items freely, be it on food or clothes when they live alone. However when it comes to managing financial affairs, they become very cautious and try to spend their pocket money only on useful resources as much as possible in order to survive on the limited amount that they have for an entire month as they have to look out after various expenses, such as food, clothing, books, accommodation rent, electricity and water charge, gas supply, etc
- THEY LEARN TO ADJUST TO NEW ENVIRONMENT AND WITH PEOPLE
It obviously takes a lot of time for anyone to adjust to a completely new surrounding all alone in a different city with new people. It is at first very awkward for students to adjust with new roommates and understand their perspective about different things, but gradually they start to become more comfortable with them and help each other in completing various tasks.
- THEY BECOME MORE MATURE
Students learn to take decisions without their parent’s interference by examining various aspects in different situations. They start to learn from experiences and try not to repeat their mistakes by thinking before acting or reacting in various circumstances very deeply.
- THEY LEARN NEW THINGS
As they start doing things on their own, students develop new skills which are important to learn in order to survive in the contemporary world, such as how to negotiate and bargain with vendors and auto drivers. They learn about the different products and vegetables that are available in the market and also their prices.
- THEY START APPRECIATING THE THINGS THEIR PARENTS DO FOR THEM
Students are completely sheltered and pampered in their homes as their parents do all the work for them and they take their efforts to provide them the best facilities for granted very easily. On the other hand, when they themselves go out to do grocery shopping and buy other things that were readily available to them, they realize how difficult it is to choose the right products and go from place to place in search of different commodities.
- THEY START FEELING HOMESICK
Yes, it does happen. Believe it or not, but students actually start missing the delicious ‘Ghar Ka Khana’ as they become bored by eating mess and outside food on a regular basis and also miss the comfort of their home and the fun they had with their family. They eagerly wait for holidays so that they can go back to their hometown in a jiffy and get free from their domestic duties!
Thus, it is truly a challenging yet wonderful experience to start living on your own as you make innumerable memories and learn practical things from experiences.Â
