Police Uses Tear Gas During Jamia Students Protest March Against CAB

The protest against Citizenship Amendment Bill at Jamia Milia Islamia University in New Delhi turned violent on Friday owing to the clash between Delhi Police and the students, who wanted to march to Parliament House.The police blocked the protest route by putting heavy barricades outside the campus, fearing violence, and detained those who tried to jump the barricades. Students resorted to stone pelting.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) closed entry and exit gates of Patel Chowk and Janpath Metro Stations due to students’ protests against the bill. Both the stations were reopened after an hour.

Police resorted to baton charge and use of tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.Fifty students were detained following the clash after the protestors were stopped at the University gate and prevented them from carrying out their march.

“We were marching peacefully when the police stopped us, then they lathi-charged us in an attempt to make us retreat,” News agency PTI quoted a law student at the University . However, a senior police officer at the spot insisted that the protesters had attacked first – forcing them to retaliate with teargas shells.

Area MLA Amanatullah Khan from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. Students at the University had also held two protest marches on Thursday evening and copies of the controversial bill were also burned at one protest.
