As a major setback for the final year students, there have been widespread conversations about the disdained results. The result for English Honours was out on the evening of May 05 and addressing the extensive discussions, students from various colleges have come forward to speak about the drastic dip in grades. We also reached out to various students who are currently in their final years to analyze the ground situation.
Evidently, there has been an uncanny fall in the grades of English Honours students. A few students from History Honours have also complained of a similar pattern. The alleged dip in the grades is speculated to be around 1-1.5 of the GPA (Grade Point Assessment). This unprecedented descend has been attributed to various administrative follies committed by the University of Delhi. “Beginning with last winter, it has continuously forced all Associations of the university to take drastic and rather unwanted steps which have, ultimately, resulted in the inordinate hindrance in the processing and declaration of the results. For example, owing to the corner into which the University administration forced its teachers, the evaluation of the last semester’s scripts were put off track,” a faculty member from the Department of English told DU Express.
A few students have also stepped up to address this issue. “Some teachers have agreed that the marks dropping down for everyone means something is definitely fishy and as students, it’s our right to know about it,” complained a student. Another said, “After 3 months of no-reasoned delay in the result… We contacted teachers and came up with the reason of low standard marking from markers who focused on quantity rather than the quality of the marked sheets… We find media to be the only source to pass on our problem to the authorities.” Another student mentioned how they “were told one week before the lockdown that the answer scripts are [sic] still unchecked.”
Parallel to the HRD Ministry’s decision, this is now supposed to be the rock bottom for the final year students as “we don’t know what the academic future holds for us and we clearly don’t wish to give up on papers in which we had put in so much hard work.” Another student iterated how the result is not helpful for them in any way, “We don’t want high marking, we are just asking for the re-evaluation of our papers… It seems like all the students have been marked on an average basis.”
Students are persistent in calling out the DUTA Strike for utter mismanagement alluding it to be an obstacle in regular classes and syllabus completion, “The DUTA strike grossly postponed our results and when they finally were declared, almost everyone in the class has scored well below their expected grade with the highest being a 7.5 SGPA,” quoted a History Honours student. Another student from History Honours, too, reiterated the same, “The difference in the CGPAs is huge… Where the highest grade amongst us lies somewhere around 7.”
As for now, a few students have allegedly “emailed the university administration to extend the deadline for the re-evaluation of the papers.” Others are still formulating their data and garnering credible facts to support their cause to address the concerned authorities.
