Historical Events

  • 1493 Christopher Columbus discovers Dominica: On 3rd November, 1978, Dominica gained full independence from the UK. Patrick Rolland John was its first Prime Minister. Coincidentally, Christopher Columbus also sighted and named it on the same day in 1493.
  • 1936 U.S. Presidential Elections: President Franklin D. Roosevelt won a second term in office after defeating Republican candidate Alf Landon. This was the most lopsided election in American history in terms of the electoral vote. Roosevelt won all but eight electoral votes and every state except Maine and Vermont.
  • 1957 Soviet Union launched Sputnik 2 with Laika: Sputnik 2 was the second spacecraft to be launched into Earth’s orbit. It was the first to carry a living animal, a Soviet space dog named Laika. She was a stray mongrel and died within hours of the launch due to overheating caused by an air conditioning malfunction.
  • 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots in India: After the assassination of Indira Gandhi on 31st October 1984, anti-Sikh riots continued for 3 days in India and observed almost 3,000 deaths. Indira Gandhi was also cremated on 3rd November.
  • 1988 Maldives coup d’état: The Maldives was invaded by mercenaries from Sri Lanka. At the request of the local government, the Indian army dismantled it and rescued the government. The operation strengthened the Indo-Maldivian relations.
  • 1992 Bill Clinton comes to power: Democrat Bill Clinton is elected President of the United States, defeating incumbent President George H. W. Bush. He became the first two-term Democratic president since Roosevelt, serving from 1993 to 2001. The US saw immense economic prosperity under his reign.
  • 2007 Pervez Musharraf declares emergency rule across Pakistan: General Musharaff suspended the Constitution, imposed the State of Emergency and fired the chief justice of the Supreme Court. He did this in response to the opposition groups calling his re-election improper.
  • 2014 Ban Ki-moon calls for global action on climate change: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon calls for global action on climate change after warning from scientists.
  • 2019 Delhi reaches 900 AQI: Delhi faced the worst pollution levels of the year as the Air Quality Index peaked up to 900. Schools were shut down till November 5 and the authorities had declared a public health emergency.

Inventions

  • 1911 Chevrolet founded: Chevrolet or Chevy officially enters the automobile market in competition with the Ford Model T in 1911. It overtook Ford as the best-selling car in America in 1929. The company is an automobile division of the American manufacturer General Motors. It was founded by Louis Chevrolet and ousted GM founder William C. Durant.
  • 1913 1st modern elastic brassiere: New York socialite Mary Phelps Jacob received the patent for the first-ever modern elastic brassiere. Exasperated with metal rods poking from underneath her gown, she sewed two silk handkerchiefs together to create the soft and light alternative. She started selling these units under the name ‘Caresse Crosby’.

  • 1618 Aurangzeb: The sixth Mughal Emperor (1658-1707) who ruled over almost the entire Indian subcontinent for 49 years.
  • 1900 Adolf Dassler: founder of Adidas.
  • 1901 Prithviraj Kapoor: Indian actor, cinematographer, and Rajya Sabha member.
  • 1933 Amartya Sen: Indian economist and Nobel Prize laureate (welfare economics and social choice theory), born in Santiniketan, West Bengal, India

  • 2019 British Mercedes driver and defending champion Lewis Hamilton finishes second in the US Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas to clinch his 6th F1 Drivers World Championship on 3rd November.
