Delhi University is likely to reduce the cut-off concession that some colleges give female students to one percentage point for admission to undergraduate courses.
Earlier, some colleges used to offer up to five percentage points relaxation in some courses.The reduction was proposed because there were many more female students than males in these co-education colleges.
This year, the university has fixed the concession at one per cent, following an analysis based on data from colleges suggesting that there is no shortage of female students.
Last month, the University had asked colleges to furnish data on how the relaxation in cut-offs was given to female students last year.
“Colleges seeking to provide concession to female applicants in some of the courses will be allowed to give one percentage point relaxation in cut-offs,” said AK Bhagi, member of DU admission committee.
“Data reflects that the colleges have given admissions to 80-90 per cent girls in specific courses. For instance, 120 girls were admitted against 100 seats. It has been decided that a uniform relaxation will apply to all colleges that have asked for relaxation,” said AK Baghi, a member of the admission committee.
Twenty colleges, including Ramjas College, Satyawati College, Maharaja Agrasen College, Shivaji College and Sri Venkateswara College, feature in this list.
The recommendations have been sent to university vice-chancellor professor Yogesh Tyagi for final approval.
Online registration for 54,000 undergraduate seats in Delhi University will start on May 28 and end on June 16.
Last month, the University had asked colleges to furnish data on how the relaxation in cut-offs was given to female students last year.
This year, applicants for sports and Extra Curriculum Activity (ECA) will also have to fill the centralised online form, unlike earlier when they had to apply to individual colleges.
