Lakshmibai College is a constituent college of the University Of Delhi. Located in Ashok Vihar, it is one of the progressive off-campus colleges in the vicinity of North Delhi, a well-founded and honorable college, where every bit of innovation is nurtured. It instills the ethereal qualities of womanhood among its students by providing them an all around development and making them politically empowered. It was established in 1965 and named in the honour of Rani Lakshmibai – the fearless warrior and patriot. It has also been ranked 80th by NIRF( National Institute Ranking Framework). The college also received the “Best Managed Campus” Award for the year 2017-2018.
The college offers a wide array of courses that consist of Undergraduate courses and Post-graduate courses along with various short-term courses. It is recognized among the top ten institutions teaching Chinese and French all across Delhi. Apart from it various other language courses and add-on courses are also available.
Lakshmibai college is proud of its excellent and committed faculty. The teachers are committed towards grooming of their students and adhere to both their academic needs and honing their skills. There’s participative leadership by teachers such that the students have bountiful time and opportunities to grow and work under able counsel. Apart from academic teachings there are other intellectual activities that the students can get indulged in, including seminars, extempore competitions, debates, presentations and group discussions. The faculties are PhDs in their respective streams with elaborate knowledge and relative experience. Also, the teachers have often received meritorious awards for their excellence and style of teaching. Dr. Anita Malhotra, Home Science(2016-2017) and Dr. Sucheta Gauba, Commerce(2017-2018) received the Meritorious Teacher Award from the government of NCT of Delhi.
The college also indulges in enumerable activities through out the year. From Vishwas Campaign in Wazirpur village to the Red Dot campaign of manufacturing low cost pads, from the celebration of the Annual day to The International Yoga day along with the enactment of the swachh bharat abhiyaan throughout the campus have been the major highlights. Lakshmibai college also became the first college of Delhi university to go cashless under the Prime Minister’s scheme of Cashless India before Demonetisation. It provides digital ID cards that are used as debit cards throughout the campus. The respective departments in the college organize their respective programs for the students, which includes the hindi sahitya program(hindi department), doodling event (economics department),technique of harmonium playing(music department).
The college is easily identifiable with its classic red-brick buildings, lawns embellished with beautiful trees and flowers, staff quarters, wireless Internet access under the university wide networking programme, separate internet connectivity, audio-video gadgets, two air-conditioned lecture theatres, furnished seminar room, a modern three-storeyed library equipped with Libsys software, two well- equipped computer labs and an active placement cell . Special SAFA systems have been loaded on the systems of the computer lab for differently-abled students to help them learn typing skills. The college has a well-maintained sports ground which is often ranked among the top 10 sports grounds in Delhi University. The college also provides a gymnasium and offers bus services to its students. Digital notice boards and wifi-enabled kiosks have also been installed in the college premises. In the year 2016-17 , Lakshmibai college became the first ever college to introduce its own android app wherein the students and the administration can stay in touch 24*7.
The progressive and interactive societies of the college cater to heterogenous aspirations of its students. These societies provide a platform to the young ladies to develop as multi-faceted talented indivisuals. Women development cell, Vivekanand study circle, Sanrakshan society, Navrangg- the drama society, Gandhi study circle, Fine arts society, an active NSS society and along with various departmental societies give the students a wide pool of exposure and helps in their growth. The students can also enroll themselves in NCC.
There are various hangout spots for students to refresh themselves both within and outside the college. The college canteen provides hygienic and affordable mouth-watering delicacies. The famous Deep Market or Deep Cinema is often bustling with the college students during the breaks. Also, the famous chhole kulche wale bhaiya and pk momos are the students’ favourite destinations for munching.
And to bust some of the myths about girls’ colleges, there is no monotony or aloofness in the college. The college stays active during the election season giving the lifelong memories to its students. Also, it is different from schools but yes, it does maintain its decorum. And to top it all, no aunties study in the college but girls with vision and aim to achieve laurels. To flaunt it all, we have an IAS officer from our college and a beauty pageant winner.
I would say the leader decides the direction and momentum. And with such visionary Principal, Dr. Pratyush Vatsala, this college has consistently been achieving new heights and defining new standards of growth and wholesome development. To conclude it all, Lakshmibai college offers multifarious streams to excel in, keeping in mind the vision and mission of the college. It helps in building a strong knowledge foundation, required to maintain a balance and a collaborative link between learner-potential and the educational process.
