University education is still a dream for many of the transgenders at DU as Campus Bias forces them to drop out and explore other options, hence disconnecting them from the mainstream. Although support from law and order is there for them but it is not enough to deal with the pressure and teasing which they encounter with.
It was in 2014 when Delhi University came up with the idea of third gender category in the postgraduate application form and the very next year in the undergraduate application form following a landmark judgement by the supreme court. The university received four applications in this category in 2015 followed by 15 in 2016. This year 70 applications have been received so far ,which shows that despite such  harassment by the society, the community has still kept its hopes alive.
A 19 year old was emotionally disturbed because other students used to tease him and poked at him for his masculine behaviour and dress preferences. Even teachers didn’t leave him and questioned him about his identity. He felt isolated and hence decided to leave college after first year and chose to work towards gender transition. He is presently a member of transgender community which has come forward this admission session with the support of voluntary organisations like Transgender Welfare Equity and Empowerment Trust and Humsafar Trust to seek education and career.
It’s not just the story of one or two transgenders but there are a lot more who are dealing with such pressure and are in a traumatic state.I feel that change in the mindset is the need of the hour. Colleges need to sensitize the students so that a friendly atmosphere can be created for transgenders.
