According to the sources, even though the  reservation topic was not on the agenda of the committee’s meeting, the members decided on discussing it because of its implementation in the upcoming session.

Last week, the HRD Ministry agreed on execution of this reservation of economically weaker section in the general category from the 2019 academic session along with increasing around 25% seats in the higher education institutes across the country.

This reservation of seats would be implemented over and above the already existing 50% reservation for the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes.

The approval upon amending the constitution to provide 10% reservation to economically weaker candidates in the general category in educational as well as service sector was given by the Rajya Sabha on 9 January,2019 and the government even went on to term this movement as “slog over sixes”.

As discussed in the previous meeting of University’s Academic Council that took place on 2 January, 30 new courses are to be introduced at the undergraduate and postgraduate level in around 20 colleges across the university.

Some of these include Bachelors of Arts in Bhimrao Ambedkar college, BA (Hons) Economics in Dyal Singh College and Guru Nanak Dev Khalsa College, BA (Hons) Philosophy in Hansraj College, Master of Arts (MA) in English in Gurunanak Dev College and Master of Science (MSc) in operational research at Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies and Keshav Mahvidyalaya.
