University of Delhi: The All India Students’ Association (AISA) has taken another stand against the upcoming Open Book Examinations (OBE) in a memorandum submitted to the Dean of Examinations. A delegation of the AISA that consisted of Prasenjeet, Delhi State Secretary and Jagannath, a member, met the Dean on June 18. The memorandum has called for the promotion of the terminal year students sans examinations, provided they are later allowed to appear for a pen-paper exam which would hold a 70:30 weightage against the Internal Assessments.

Addressed to the Dean of Students’ Welfare, the Vice Chancellor and the Joint Controller of Examinations, the memo highlights the difficulties being faced by the students across the country in the wake of a pandemic. The poor network connectivity across the country, especially in the rural India, and the unavailability of a high-speed internet in Kashmir are the reasons that were primarily cited against the ‘discriminatory’ nature of the OBE. A considerable number of students failed to attend the online classes while many do not have access to study resources, both online and offline, as was mentioned.

The memorandum has also highlighted the plight of the visually impaired students who recently moved the Delhi High Court against the OBE. The surveys conducted by the Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) and by the AISA itself presented that almost 90% of the students do not find themselves in a position to take any examination during this health crisis. A signature petition against the OBE was also submitted in which hundreds of students had participated.

The delegation of the AISA that met the Dean also concretized its argument by quoting how other varsities like the Pondicherry University, the Jamia Millia Islamia University and several IITs have discarded the idea of online examinations. The AISA has put forward the demands considering the diversity in the area and background of the students of the University en masse.
