DU has given a nod to the proposal for commencing Four Year Undergraduate Programs (FYUP) from the academic year 2022 amid protests against the same. The implementation of the new four year programs under the National Education Policy will imply scrapping off the current M. Phil courses offered by the varsity.

In a meeting held on Tuesday, the Executive Council of DU passed the Four Year Undergraduate Programs. It also gave clearance to the multiple entry-exit system part of FYUP. From the academic year 2022-2023, undergraduate courses will have a duration of four years instead of the existing three years. This will provide students with the option of entering or exiting the program after a period of one, two or three years.
What Does the Four Years UG Program Look Like
Students will be required to complete some additional courses during their first three years alongside their existing ones. These will be a language course (one of two languages must be an Indian language), a Social and Emotional Learning course, an Innovation and Entrepreneurship course, co-curricular, and an Ethics and Culture course. In their final year, students who choose the four-year program with research options must complete a thesis or an internship.
Students pursuing a degree in commerce will be required to select one discipline from the humanities or social sciences. They will have to take six courses from that discipline during their 3rd and 4th years- writing dissertations for the same.
As far as the existing, ongoing Honors courses in science, arts, and commerce are concerned, these will continue as they have been with some additions. Students can graduate after completion of any number of years. They will graduate with a certificate after one year, and a diploma after two years. Completion of three years will provide them honours in the discipline. However, it is only if they choose to continue for the 4th year that they will be able to get honours with research.
The Academic Bank of Credit
The goal of the Academic Bank of Credit is to provide students with flexibility. According to Indian Express, it will give students “ample chances to choose the optimum combination of transdisciplinary and multidisciplinary courses”. Students will be able to gain credits by taking non-core courses at other universities and colleges. These credits will then be added to their academic “bank.”
Discontinuation of the M. Phil Program
Students will not have to get themselves enrolled in M. Phil programs to pursue a PhD from the 2022-2023 session. The varsity will offer them one-year and two-year PG programs aimed at skill development required for PhD courses.
Protests by DU Teachers
The Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) has been protesting the adoption of NEP, claiming that the four-year undergraduate curriculum in universities dilutes degrees. Even as the Academic Council held their meeting, the association continued to protest outside the VC’s office on Tuesday.
“Survey amongst students (carried out in 2013) showed that students were spending close to Rs 1.5-2 lakh per year in staying in Delhi to receive education. Students rejected the idea of FYUP because of the dilution of the first two years of FYUP. We see that the new model once again packs first two semesters with lukewarm courses”, claimed DUTA in a statement- referring to the temporary adoption of four years UG programs in 2013 which later got scrapped.
