DU colleges are expected to release higher cut off lists this year for the undergraduate course following the high cut-off trend of St Stephens. Stephens cut-off list released on Tuesday alludes a high number of applicants with higher percentages. The first cut off list released by Stephens for undergraduate courses recorded the highest cut-off at 99.25 per cent in BA Economics Hons for students from commerce stream.
The Officials from Delhi University stated the cut-offs will be higher than last year as many students have scored above 95 per cent from CBSE Board 12th examinations. ISE and State boards also recorded very high percentage this year. The CBSE board students comprise of 2,85,128 applications out of the total of 3,49,541 applications this year.
In 2019, around 94,299 students in CBSE board had scored above 90 per cent, this year, the number has gone up to 1,57,934. Similarly, the numbers of students scoring above 95 per cent have increased from 17,690 in 2019 to 38,686 in 2020 – a difference of about 20,996 students. There are limited seats but the percentage rate is higher so the cut-off list for DU colleges is bound to be higher.
Statements regarding the high cut-off list
Shobha Bagai, Dean (Admissions), DU, said the university will not increase the cut-offs randomly. Indeed there is a chance of higher cut off but it depends on the number of applicants falling in certain courses. She further added, “The cut-offs are likely to be announced after October 12. We have sent the schedule to the administration. The administration is waiting for the UGC calendar. We should hopefully announce the schedule for cut-offs in this week.”
Manoj Khanna, the principal of Ramjas College, said, “We will have to go by approximation. The cut-offs will be higher in the first and second lists than last year. There is a lot of unpredictability also. We cannot have over admissions considering we have to maintain social distancing also. Where will we make students sit if there are extra admissions? So cut-offs are bound to be higher.”
The Principal of Hindu College, Anju Srivastava said, “Our admissions begin and end with students who have the highest percentages and it always comes down to a margin of 2, 3, 4 marks. So it only comes down to the percentages of the highest scorers. The data from their applications on the basis of which St. Stephen’s created its cut-off list indicates the high percentages of the applicants and there is no reason why the same set of applicants won’t apply for general admission”.
“With the interview, they have a mechanism which enables them to not admit more than sanctioned strength of students while we have no admission filter other than the cut-off list, which pushes us to be even more cautious with our lists. Their high cut-offs despite these filters definitely indicates the flow of things.” said a principal of another college stating St Stephens and other colleges admission process difference.
The pandemic has thwarted the academic session by two months already. This time the admission process is going to be held online and the first cut-off list will be announced by the second week of October.
