He also mentioned how despite the pandemic, DU saw an increase in the number of international students. In early January 2021, the University Grants Commission allowed the ‘Institutions of Eminence’ (IoE) to establish overseas campuses in different countries. The move was an attempt to achieve the New Education Policy’s stated intent of “internationalisation of education”. However, as per UGC guidelines, an IoE can start a maximum of three off-campus centres in five years, but not more than 1 campus per academic year.

In 2020, DU started 9 new departments including the ones on climate change and public health. It also improved its hostel facilities all in an attempt to fit the criteria to be recognized as an IoE. DU is now recognized as one of the many ‘Institutions of Eminence’ in India. Now, DU is set to make the most out of the new education policy by setting up overseas campuses.
