First Year DU Students: What Should You Expect?

With applications closed for UG admissions and a date for the first cutoff set, new DU students can expect a challenging year ahead. Straight from the cutoffs to the blended online and offline classes, these students have much to look forward to.

Very High Cutoffs

St. Stephens College, although under the University of Delhi, releases its results separate from the DU cutoffs. Their first list was released this past week and had a sky-high cutoff for almost all courses. With the highest cutoff for Economics at 99.5%, most courses have a cutoff well above the 95% threshold. Keeping that in mind, it is extremely likely that most colleges, at least in the first couple of lists, will have extremely high percentage expectations. Apart from St. Stephens, Jesus and Mary College also releases their own cutoff lists separate from university lists.

With 62 colleges and only 70,000 seats, it is plausible to expect a hundred per cent cutoff in multiple streams in top colleges. Last year, LSR announced a 100% cutoff for its Economics, Political Science and Psychology Hons. courses. The situation this year might be a step beyond with over 4.3 lakh students (as of September 2nd) applying for undergrad courses. A total of five lists are released before the new session officially starts. But the number of cutoffs put out to fill the seats are about nine. Additionally, there are also multiple special lists and ECA cut-offs.

Crossover Online-Offline

The Principal of Hansraj College shared her thoughts on what the year for the batch of 2021-2024 might look like, in an interview with The Indian Express. According to her, the coming year will be dynamic and ever-evolving due to the situation that is presented by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. To date, colleges have only been re-opened for third-year students in science courses for practical classes. Even then the colleges are set up to only accommodate half of the class at a time. It is likely that the privilege of attending in-person college classes will be expanded to students slowly. This will also most likely happen only after a couple more months. Colleges are trying their best to make online classes as educative and lucrative for students as possible. This includes webinars and e-courses in their curriculums.
