The Delhi Transport Corporation has issued Pink bus passes to women enabling them free bus rides. This action is a follow up to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s announcement in June concerning making DTC buses and Delhi metro travel free for women.
The Chief Minister inaugurated the scheme on the 29th of October 2019, which was also the festival of Bhai Dooj. This free-ride scheme is aimed at ensuring the safety of women and increasing their role in the economy. While the government is struggling to provide free metro passes, women in Delhi can now enjoy free bus rides on DTC buses and Cluster buses.
As many as 1.5 crore pink passes have been printed as of now. These passes have women empowerment quotes marked on them. Around a third of DTC and Cluster bus passengers are women who are being issued pink passes under the scheme. The government will also be reimbursing Rs.10 for each pass issued to DTC.
In addition to the pink passes, about 13,000 bus marshals and 6,000 civil defence personnel have been deployed to ensure the safety of women in the bus. Alongside this, 5,000 additional buses will also ply to accommodate the passengers.
