Kamala Nehru College celebrates the essence of womanhood by bestowing the vision which helps us realise our true potential, strength and caliber. Kamala Nehru College has been awarded A grade by NAAC in the year 2016 and holds its ground in Delhi University’s best colleges for pursuing English Honours.

The Faculty

English Honours is perhaps among the best courses which the college offers. That’s because the Department of English gives its students the opportunity to be educated by erudite, intellectual and enriching faculty. They nurture, encourage and guide the students not just in the academic front but also in life by imparting their life experiences. They make us realise our true potential and help us grow academically and also morally. The faculty members are very amiable as well as understanding. The classes are interesting and occasional presentations, group or individual works are allotted. The tests and assignments aim at making the students think critically and progress.

Departmental activities/events

There are many activities and events which take place within the English department from time to time. Some of them are penned below.

The Department of English in collaboration with the English Language Fellow (EFL) programme of the Regional English Language Office (RELO, American Embassy) offered a specialised certificate course in on Academic Writing which was facilitated by a Visiting Faculty from University of Delaware. It focused on academic writing, communication skills and remedial classes for its students. A basic workshop on “Applying to American Universities and Writing a Statement of Purpose (SoP)” was also conducted for the UG students.

The department under the ELF programme during the academic session 2016-2017 welcomed a Visiting Faculty from the University of Maryland, USA, who aided classes on academic writing, remedial English and Introduction to TOEFL for the English honours students and the BA (Programme) English Discipline students of the college.

The department in collaboration with Katha India conducted a Certificate Course on ‘Translating India: Understanding Diversity’ (Jan-Mar ‘16) which was a Translation and Media course offered to the faculty and students. The participants were familiarised with the challenges and problems of translation in different modes of media such as the Web, Advertising, Broadcasting and Cinema. Experts like Alka Malhotra (UNICEF), Sayema Rehman (Radio Mirchi), Ravikant (CSDS) and Marya Shakil (CNN-IBN) mentored each session.

It also offered a certificate course on “Introduction to Culture Studies” (Feb-Apr ‘16 and Aug-Jan ‘17) which covered topics such as ‘Popular Culture and Subculture Studies’, ‘The Inception of Culture Studies’, ‘Media Studies’ and ‘Postmodernism’.

It also organised an international, two day conference at the India International Centre on ‘Urban Spaces: Representations, Practices, Experiences in the Indian Subcontinent’. It addressed causes of gendered safety, spatial areas for children in the city and student protests.

A workshop on ‘Comics: Methods and Histories’ was also conducted, which presented a concise history of sequential art through different ages just so the students could understand the stemma of “comics” in present days. It enabled the students to comprehend the process of producing texts and also helping them expand the ideas of what a “text” constitutes.

Infrastructure

Kamala Nehru College has an excellent infrastructure and is considered to be amongst the best in Delhi University. It has a three storeyed library which has a massive collection of books. There are two well-equipped computer labs, two seminar halls and a fully air conditioned auditorium.

The college also provides a gymnasium with reasonable charges to its students. In addition to the main building, there are also seven beautiful and airy, eco friendly classrooms, known as Bamboo Rooms, where classes are held.

Societies within the Department

The Literary Society: Every student of the English department is by default the member of this society. It manages almost all the activities and events in the department.

Crossfire : The members of English Debating Society have achieved accolades in various tournaments over the last year. The students who are interested in debates and discussions can be a part of this society.

KNC Book Club : If you are a book lover and an avid reader, then book club is the perfect society for you to join. Any member can exchange or lend books and novels from other members in the college. The book club also organises poetry and book reading sessions with renowned author during the Meet ‘n’ Greet sessions. It helps the members with reading and writing abilities to meet the authors and know about their style of writing.

Expressions : Expressions is the English Creative Writing society of the department. It allows the aspiring writers to come together to share their creation. Expressions provides them with a supportive and friendly environment.

Placement

The Placement Cell of Kamala Nehru College, Prospicio offers the students quality placements. On 1st Sept ‘16, among the students who desired for placement, five students from the Department of English got placed in NIIT, a multinational company, as Senior Content Developer.

Canteen

Kamala Nehru College’s canteen is considered to be one of the best canteens in DU. The food is undeniably appetising as well as hygienic, and the cleanliness standards are always under check. You need to be full when you have a stringent timetable, morning classes with nearly no breaks. And here’s when the canteen comes to your rescue. From delicious Pav Bhaji, Shahi Paneer-Naan, Rajma Chawal to yummy Honey Chilli Potato, Dosa and Spring Roll, the canteen treats you with wide variety of cuisines, that too without burning a hole in your pocket. And how can we forget Chai/Coffee? They are a must!

Your between classes hunger pangs will easily and deliciously be satiated. Apart from the canteen, the college also has a Nescafé booth and Coca Cola Station.

Chaupal

One of the best things to remember KNC by is its open amphitheatre, better known as the Chaupal. It is the most happening place after the canteen. It is surrounded by lush green trees from all around which forms a beautiful, grand canopy. The Chaupal is preferred by students to sit, chat, study and munch on, hence it’s almost always bustling with people! Many department activities and sometimes lectures are also conducted in the environment so fresh and airy.

Lastly, being a student of English honours at KNC, I can pretty much assure you that it is a place to cherish. Your three years at KNC would be beautiful and dazzling. Leaving with you, at the end, tons of wistful memories!
