As the world stands still due to the outbreak of coronavirus, humans under lockdown are looking for various ways to make good use of the leisure time but the fact that masses have engaged in excessive use of social media platforms can’t be denied either. To let you off your mobile screens, here is a list of movies that will surely feed your curiosity but may also scare you as all they depict about are diseases, their outbreak, their treatment and the aftermaths.
1. Flu (2013)
South Korean disaster film written and directed by Kim Sung-Su is about an outbreak of a deadly  H5N1 that kills its victims within 36 hours which leads to chaos in the district of Bundang in Seongnam, which has a population of nearly half a million people. The movie surely will surely keep you glued to the TV screens but might freak you out as well as seeing the current scenario.
2. Contagion (2011)
The plot of this American thriller film directed by Steven Soderbergh revolves around the spread of a virus transmitted by fomites, Â attempts by medical researchers and public health officials to identify and contain the disease, the loss of social order in a pandemic, and the introduction of a vaccine to contain its spread. The way movie progresses might leave you scared as it appears very similar to the outbreak of coronavirus.
3. Quarantine 1 and 2
An American footage horror film(2008) directed by John Eric Dowdle which revolves around a television reporter and her cameraman who get trapped inside a building quarantined by the CDC, after the outbreak of a mysterious virus which turns humans into bloodthirsty killers whereas its sequel (2011) written and directed by John Pogue revolves around a mutated rabies infection outbreak in a quarantined airport and taking place the same night and nearly same time as the events of the first film. Gather some courage to watch quarantine while in quarantine.
4. Virus (2019)
An Indian Malayalam-language medical thriller film directed by Aashiq Abu set in the backdrop of the 2018 Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala and revolves around the journey of medical professionals, health officials and the people of the districts who join together to tackle it. The film received critical acclaim and was a major box office success. It is a must-watch.
5. The Road (2009)
An American film directed by John Hillcoat is based on a novel of the same name by Corman McCarthy. A dark and underrated film which may leave anyone watching it a bit disturbed. A son and his father’s life in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where the cannibals have menaced the streets is enough to keep you gasping throughout the film. This heart wrenching and the thought-provoking film deserves a watch.
6. World War Z (2013)
This apocalyptic horror film directed by Marc Foster revolves around Gerry, a former United Nations employee whose life takes an unexpected turn as he takes to investigates a threatening virus that turns humans into zombies. Starring Brad Pitt, this suspense, and action-packed thriller are insane!
7. Outbreak (1995)
A medical disaster film directed by Wolfgang Petersen and based on Richard Preston’s nonfiction book The Hot Zone. A handful of scientists struggle to find a cure a virus carried by a monkey host from the African rain forest, starts infecting the entire population. This film can be considered a precursor to Contagion.
8. 28 Days Later (2002)
A British post-apocalyptic horror film directed by Danny Boyle is something you would like to avoid if you don’t want to ruin your quarantine time. A city wiped out due to the outbreak of a deadly virus and the struggle of four survivors (Murphy, Harris, Burns, and Gleeson) to cope with the destruction of the life they once knew. Yes, think twice before you watch this one and also its sequel 28 weeks later.
9. Dawn of the Dead (2004)
An American action horror film directed by Zack Snyder is about human survivors of an epidemic who take refuge in a shopping mall located in the fictional town of Everett, Wisconsin, are surrounded by zombies. This exciting and fast-paced movie is definitely worth a watch.
10. I am Legend (2007)
Again a post-apocalyptic action thriller film based on the 1954 novel of the same name by Richard Matheson and directed by Francis Lawrence is about Robert Neville, a scientist, is the last human survivor of a plague in the whole of New York. He attempts to find a way to reverse the effects of the man-made virus by using his own immune blood. Starring Will Smith, this movie boasts a well-plotted storyline and an outstanding screenplay. A must watch indeed.
11. Train to Busan (2016)
Imagine being trapped in a train amidst a zombie outbreak. Well, this South Korean film directed by Yeon Sang-Ho is pretty much about it. As a zombie outbreak sweeps the country, a dad and his daughter take a harrowing train journey in an attempt to reach the only city that’s still safe. A Movie all should watch for a gripping experience but if you freak out easily please stay away.
